If you are in the market for a new car, you might want to consider shopping for a Kia.

That automaker took top honors for sedans and SUVs in Edmunds’ Top Rated Awards 2021.

In selecting the award winners, Edmunds used a mixture of proprietary data and insights it gleans from new vehicle testing. Each year, Edmunds editors drive more than 500,000 miles and conduct thousands of hours of testing on more than 300 vehicles.

Vehicles that earned “best-in-class” awards this year excelled in five key criteria:

  • Performance
  • Comfort
  • Technology
  • Fuel economy
  • Value

The Top Rated Awards 2021 were open to vehicles that underwent Edmunds’ full testing process by Dec. 15 and would be available for sale as new on Jan. 1. So, the list of award winners was not necessarily limited to 2021 models.

Vehicles that earned best-in-class awards are:

  • Sedan — 2021 Kia K5
  • Luxury sedan — 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
  • SUV — 2021 Kia Telluride
  • Luxury SUV — 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE
  • Truck — 2021 Ford F-150
  • EV (electric vehicle) — 2020 Tesla Model 3
  • Luxury EV (electric vehicle) — 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E
  • Sports car — 2021 Chevrolet Corvette

Edmunds says the Kia K5 took the top spot among sedans because it has a ride that is “as smooth as that of some luxury sedans.” It also praised the K5 for being “nearly silent inside” at highway speeds.

Meanwhile, the Kia Telluride got top marks for being roomy and well-designed. In fact, Edmunds says the vehicle’s design and use of materials inside and out “remind us of the kind of smart, understated style more commonly associated with German luxury car design.”
