GE 2020: From New Faces To Old-Timers, Here’s A List Of Candidates Who Will Be Contesting

Over the course of three days since PM Lee Hsien Loong called for an election, the political parties have announced their line-up of candidates ahead of Nomination Day on June 30.

People’s Action Party has unveiled a total of 27 candidates, while opposition parties Workers’ Party and Progress Singapore Party have revealed twelve and 24 candidates respectively.

We take a look at the confirmed political parties and candidates that will be contesting in GE 2020:

People’s Action Party

The PAP unveiled all of its 27 new candidates over the span of three days in a total of 6 batches. The candidates come from various sectors, ranging from the business sector to the social sector to the public service sector.

Workers’ Party

The Workers’ Party (WP), headed by Pritam Singh, has unveiled a total of nine candidates so far including two NCMPs, and Low Thia Khiang’s legislative assistant.

Progress Singapore Party

Progress Singapore Party, headed by Tan Cheng Bock, has unveiled a total of 24 candidates so far, including a former PSC scholar and Singapore Airlines (SIA) pilot.

Ms Gigene Wong
54– Former chief executive officer of Gulf Oil China
– Former chief finance officer of Foshan Electrical and Lighting Co.
Hazel Poa
50– Served in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service Division
– Now owns five education centres and a private school
Sri Nallakaruppan
56– A chartered accountant registered with the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants
– Works as an investment specialist in capital markets for 25 years
Bradley Bowyer
53– Works in film, television and theatre
– Former member of the Peoples Voice party
Muhammad Taufik Supan
40– Information technology professional
Leong Mun Wai
60– Former Public Service Commission (PSC) scholar
– Managing Director of OCBC Securities
– Director of Merrill Lynch HK and Investment officer of GIC
Terence Soon
29– Pilot at Singapore Airlines, previously running his own business in the private aviation industry
Abdul Rahman
67– Formerly working with the Singapore Fire Brigade in 1975, and now a Fellow with the Institution of Fire Engineers UK.
– He is currently working as a Consulting Engineer specialising in Fire and Life Safety audit and design with Parsons International.
Kala Manickam
52– Former Platoon Commander of the Women Wing in SAF later switching to the private sector, holding 30 years of working experience in Human Resource Management and Learning Development
Jeffrey Khoo Poh Tiong
51– Chief Marketing Officer, APAC for an MNC in the insurance sector
– Honorary Treasurer at The National University of Singapore Society (NUSS)
Lim Cher Hong
42– Author and Chartered Financial Consultant
– He was a Programme Coordinator cum Trainer for the Silver Generation Office (SGO)
Michael Chua
55Received Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Merit Scholarship in 1985
– He left active service in 2002 as a Major and moved to the private sector, but continued doing National Service as a Deputy Brigade Commander until 2016
– Now runs a private firm in environmental sector
Kumaran Pillai
49– Co-founded The Independent Singapore but left in Feb to join politics
– Now manages several startups and is the chief executive officer of venture accelerator Apple Seed
Wendy Low
43– Intellectual property lawyer at Eldan Law LLP
– Volunteers with Justice Without Borders to provide pro-bono legal advice to domestic workers
Nadarajah Loganathan
57– Co-founder of a skills-training firm
– Served in the SAF for 25 years as a lieutenant-colonel
Damien Tay
51– Worked in commercial operations in an MNC for 30 years
– Now a customer service manager
Choo Shaun Ming
23Studied at Raffles Institution where he was a student leader
Started as a law undergraduate student in NUS
Dr Tan Meng Wah
57– Former Research Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), NUS
– Before joining IPS, he was an Associate Lecturer with UniSIM
– Received his PhD in World Economics from Nanjing University in China
Works as an industry consultant teaching at NTU, with its M.Sc in Technopreneurship
Abas Kasmani
67– A business consultant and senior trainer
Kayla Low
43– A chartered accountant and chief operating officer and chief financial officer of a group of 11 companies
– Former prisons officer 
Harish Pillay
60– Global head of community architecture and leadership at software firm Red Hat
Dr Ang Yong Guan
65– Served as a psychiatrist at the SAF Military Medicine Institute
Awarded the Public Service Medal (PBM)
Contested in the GE as a candidate for Singapore Democratic Party
Ran in the GE as a candidate for SingFirst (Singaporeans First) political party

Which GRCs Would They Be Contesting For?

WP has confirmed that it will be contesting in Sengkang GRC, Marine Parade GRC, East Coast GRC and Aljunied GRC. Sengkang GRC and Aljunied GRC have been known to be WP’s stomping grounds.

They are also contesting in Hougang and Punggol West SMCs.

On the other hand, PSP is expected to contest at West Coast Group GRC, Nee Soon GRC, Chua Chu Kang GRC, Tanjong Pagar GRC, Hong Kah North SMC, Marymount SMC, Kebun Baru SMC and Pioneer SMC.
