I admit I totally fell for the hype about the new Maybelline Lifter Gloss $ 8.99when I saw the colors in the packaging. They had just the right amount of sparkle and depth. Is it just hype though? Yes and no. I purchased three shades at a buy one get one free sale at Walgreen’s. Let’s dig in.
Before we get into the shades, let’s talk about the gloss in general. Most impressive for me is how smooth and moisturizing this gloss is. Hyaluronic acid in the formula makes lips feel super, super hydrated and gives them high shine. I also love that the formula is nice and thin and not sticky. And….I can honestly say Lifter Gloss does really smooth out my lip lines making them less noticeable. I haven’t noticed my lips looking fuller which is a disappointment to me. I’m always trying to plump my thin lips without a needle but Lifter Gloss is a fail for me in that regard.
On to the shades! They are all very subdued and natural-looking, no stunners here. All of the shades should work for all skin tones. Some have fine shimmer, some not. There are ten shades–I have three to show you today.
Moon is a pale pink with subtle silver shimmer, Petal is an opaque warm medium pink with no sparkle and Topaz is a pretty peachy nude with gold shimmer. I’m told Topaz is a duplicate for Fenty Glow, Rhianna’s line. If that’s true, Topaz is a real steal at $ 8.99 vs $ 20!
Theses are very sheer; Moon looks like my natural pale pink lips but with shimmer. Personally, I prefer more color so I’ll use this one as a lipstick topper. Topaz is a sheer peach with gold shimmer and Petal is a sheer medium pink that is a few shades lighter than what’s in the tube.
The packaging is pretty but I don’t think the bigger doe-foot does this gloss any favors. I would prefer a slimmer doe-foot for better application. There is a very strong vanilla sugar scent that borders on obnoxious and does linger. My friend Marcia is sensitive to scents, and I’d advise her to skip these glosses. Sorry, Marcia!
Bottom Line: There is a lot to love about Maybelline’s Lifter Gloss. They are ultra-hydrating, have a beautiful shade selection, smooths lines and are affordable! If, however, you prefer your glosses to have more pigment, you might want to skip these.
