Shell and the Energy Market Authority (EMA) have awarded a research grant to a consortium led by local solar company Eigen Energy to pilot solar-powered charging stations by early 2022.
As part of the pilot, these charging stations will be fitted at three Shell service stations in Tampines, Pasir Ris and Lakeview.
An interesting feature of the charging stations is that it offers fast-charging — up to three times faster — for electric vehicles (EVs).
It will provide up to an 80 per cent charge in about 30 minutes, depending on the EV model.
Shell currently has a network of 18 stations with EV charging services in Singapore, and these existing stations only offer 50 kilowatt rapid direct current chargers.
With the addition of these new stations, close to 40 per cent of Shell’s network in Singapore will now offer EV fast-charging options.
“As the drive towards a lower carbon future intensifies, Shell is supporting the country’s push towards more sustainable development by offering faster EV charging which would provide drivers with more choices in decarbonisation,” said Aw Kah Peng, chairman of Shell Companies in Singapore.
She added that Shell aims to have an extensive network of EV charging options so customers can easily find one near them.
